Inspection of Forgings

AIT has developed a process to inspect forgings to meet the critical requirements of MIL-STD-2154 and ASTM E 2375.

This occurs immediately following the machining process, which has reduced the time needed from the order of the raw material through finish machining of the forging. The forgings below are used for Steel Cantenary Risers (SCR's), offshore pipelines and flow lines.

As forged J-Lay collars ready to be machined. The center hub section of the collar is used for handling purposes off-shore during the installation of the pipe.

J-Lay collar being machined to the "ultrasonic ready inspection shape". The center hub will have no radius on the sides and the weld bevels will not be present until the inspection is performed and the forging has been accepted.

J-Lay collar being inspected by conventional AUT in accordance with MIL-STD-2154 and ASTM E 2375. This inspection being performed after machining, improved the delivery time from the forger by several months as they no longer had to machine the forgings for inspection prior to shipment. The forger now just guarantees the part to pass UT.
