Manual Ultrasonic Testing
AIT provides Manual Ultrasonic Testing (MUT) services to the fabrication, construction, power generation and Oil & Gas Industries.
AIT's MUT services utilize both Phased Array and conventional ultrasonic testing to inspect welds and forgings.
MUT may be used as a preliminary or "information only" inspection, or as a final inspection on piping, vessels, furnace tubes or structural steel. MUT is a quick, non-intrusive, cost effective inspection that in the hands of an experienced practitioner is also reliable.

MUT techniques include using a compression wave (straight beam) for determining wall thicknesses and for the detection of laminar type defects. Compression wave testing is also used for the detection of pitting or corrosion and to determine the depth of the pits or corrosion detected.

MUT techniques also include using a shear wave (angle beam) for the detection of flaws at or near the fusion line of a weld, or within the weld itself. Shear waves are more sensitive than compression waves but do not have as much power to penetrate dense microstructures (some austenitic materials) and are much more prone to attenuation (energy loss) at fusion lines and dissimilar metal boundaries.
