Manufacturing of Flawed Specimens
This A707 forging material has a 13.5 OD x
1.945 thick and has Inconelฎ 625 ID clad
(.187 thick). This weld was produced for
Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT)
technique development and procedure
qualification.
Flaws have been implanted along the
weld bevel to simulate lack of fusion. The weld was completed using the
actual production welding procedure,
equipment, personnel and filler
material. Flaws simulating the critical
flaw size (.019 deep x .23 long) were
used to validate the AUT technique and
procedure for inspecting dissimilar
metal welds.
This pipe has a 32 OD x 1.25 wall thick and
is being used to qualify the inspection
technique. AIT produced this weld for an oil &
gas customer to ensure that flaws at or near the
critical flaw size would be detected and sized
accurately.
Flaws have been implanted along the
weld bevel to simulate lack of fusion.
The weld was completed using
production welding equipment,
personnel and filler material. The flaws
were used to validate the AUT
technique and procedure for inspecting
platform tendon legs. Tendon legs are
used to attach an offshore platform to the ocean floor.
