Inspection for OD Clad Bond Integrity
When a Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA) is applied to either surface of a part, the inspection approach needs to be suited for the application.
A CRA is applied to the outside of some hydraulic cylinders to help prevent galling, lengthen the life of seals and to protect the surface of the cylinder from corrosion. The CRA layer is typically quite thin, < 4 mm which makes a meaningful UT inspection much more difficult.
By inspecting from the clad surface and establishing delays to maximize the response from the interface between the CRA and carbon steel cylinder, the cylinder can be inspected to ensure that the clad has a metallurgical bond. Areas with poor bonding or no bond are easily identified.
